Regulation of Professional Geologists

The Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing staffs the geology program.

Geologist certification in Alaska is based solely upon the registration requirements of the American Institute of Professional Geologists. Certifications have no expiration date and require no renewal fees.

Geologists who practice independently, on a contract basis, must obtain an
Alaska Business License.

a. Professional Geologists

License Applications

Certification as a Professional Geologist, #08-4126, Revised 05/07/12. Must also submit verification of certification as a professional geologist by the American Institute of Professional Geologists. This form may be completed online with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 or higher, then printed and mailed.

Statutes and Regulations

Alaska Statutes are passed by the legislature. Regulations (also called the Alaska Administrative Code) are rules adopted by the department to implement, interpret, and make specific the statutes. Both statutes and regulations have the force of law.

AS 08.02.011 specifically applies to geologists. AS 08.01 - 08.03 and regulations 12 AAC 02 apply to all professions regulated by the division.

Proposed regulations are advertised in Alaska newspapers and we invite public comment on them. If you would like to receive notice of proposed regulations, please write to the regulations specialist and request that your name be added to the Geologists interested parties list. Please advise us if you move or wish your name removed from the mailing list.

"The commissioner of community and economic development shall certify an applicant as a professional geologist if the applicant is certified as a professional geologist by the American Institute of Professional Geologists." AS 08.02.011
