Division of Community and Regional Affairs

The community online database is a compilation of published data from a variety of sources.  The data is organized by locations in Alaska that include Communities and Places of Interest.

An area is classified as a Community if it:

  • Is a City, Borough, or an unincorporated area with a qualified entity that has received money from the Community Revenue Sharing program at least once within the last five (5) consecutive years.

(*Areas that were included as combined areas using a backslash in the Borough Resolution have been included as separate communities in the database.)

A Place of Interest (POI) is an area that does not meet the criteria to be defined as a community. These may include:

  • Population Clusters inside a Unified Home Rule Borough or City;
  • Population Clusters outside a Unified Home Rule Borough or City;
  • Census Areas;
  • Census Designated Places (CDPs) that do not meet the definition of a community;
  • Seasonally Inhabited Places that include areas with summer cabins or camps;
  • Military Bases, Work Camps, and similar areas that are not open to the public;
  • Relocation Sites to which residents are moving from a location impacted by erosion or flooding;
  • Recreation Sites;
  • Vacant Sites of former towns or native villages;
  • Commercial Service Areas;
  • Resource Development Sites; and
  • ANCSA Villages.

Economy

Source: Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Research and Analysis
Attribute Last Update Data Year Description/Source
Residents Employed in 2015 11/7/2016 2015 The data are by place of residence, and residency is established by matching wage record file data with Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) information. The wage record file is derived from ADOLWD's Occupational Database (ODB) and contains quarterly earnings, occupation and industry information on workers covered by unemployment insurance within Alaska. For a match to occur, the worker's social security number must have appeared in both the PFD and the wage file. Workers with missing social security numbers were excluded from the analysis. Federal workers, military, and the self-employed are not included. The duration of a worker's employment is not a factor in the count of workers - a person is counted as a worker once they earn any wages covered under Alaska's unemployment insurance system. Workers are assigned to the occupation and industry in which they earned the most money. A person will be counted only once, even if they worked in multiple occupations.
Residents Age 16 and Over 11/7/2016 2015 The number of residents age 16+ is derived directly from PFD applicant information. Population estimates are calculated using a model that relies on PFD information as one input, but also the relationship between the PFD applicants at the time of the US census with the census count and other variables.
Resident Wages in 2015 ($) 11/7/2016 2015 Wage data is for Alaska Residents only, based on workers covered by Alaska Unemployment Insurance. Data doesn't include Federal workers, military, or self-employed. Non-resident wages are not included. Residency is determined by matching wage record file data with Permanent Fund Dividend Information.
Residents Employed (%) 11/7/2016 2015 Numbers of workers employed, as a percentage of the population 16 and over.
Employed in Private Sector (%) 11/7/2016 2015 Percentage of workers employed in private sector.
Employed in Local Gov.(%) 11/7/2016 2015 Percentage of workers employed in local government.
Employed in State Gov.(%) 11/7/2016 2015 Percentage of workers employed in state government.
Employed in all 4 Quarters (%) 11/7/2016 2015 Percentage of workers that were employed during all four quarters.
New Hires 11/7/2016 2015 New hires are a subset of the total number of workers. If a worker is a new hire for one or more employers in the given year, they are counted as a new hire. A new hire is defined as a worker that did not work for that employer in any of the previous four quarters. New hires include turnover replacements as well as new jobs and should not be used to infer net job growth trends.
Unemployment Insurance Claimants 11/7/2016 2015 UI Claimants are persons who have had an active unemployment insurance claim in the reported year.
