Become an approved CE course provider and get courses approved.

Become a CE Course Provider

Provider Application

Apply online through SBS. There is a $200 application fee.

Your approval to advertise, sponsor, and offer CE courses is valid through December 31 of the fourth year after the approval date.

Providers are required to maintain all records for four years.

Provider Renewal

Providers may apply for renewal through SBS OnlineCE up to 60 days prior to their expiration. The renewal fee is $100.

It's your responsibility to renew - you will not receive a reminder.

You may not advertise, sponsor, or offer CE courses to Alaska licensees if you fail to renew before your expiration date.

Late Renewal

You may submit your renewal application within 60 days after your expiration date if you include an additional $50 late renewal fee.

Changes to Provider Contact Info

You are required to update your contact info through SBS when your contact or contact info changes.

Course Approval Process

Approved CE providers must complete and submit a CE course application through SBS and pay a $50 course application fee.

Approval for any course expires September 1 of the second year after the date of approval.

Contact Course

The following documentation is required when submitting a Contact Course application:

  • Course content outline or summary with estimates of the time to be spent on each topic covered
  • Contact information for each instructor (name, phone number, email address)
  • Grading, evaluation, and course completion criteria
  • Course instruction method
  • See instructor qualifications

Online course applications require the following additional documentation:

  • Reference materials, graphics, and interactivity
  • Instructions on how to register, navigate, and complete the course
  • Technical support available during business hours
  • A process to verify participant's ID
  • A method of preventing access to the examination until the course has been completed
Self-Study Course

The following documentation is required when submitting a Self-Study Course application:

  • Course content outline or summary
  • Any study guides, documents, or materials provided to course participants
  • Grading, evaluation, and course completion criteria
  • Sample examinations
  • Course instruction method

Online course applications require the following additional documentation:

  • Reference materials, graphics, and interactivity
  • Instructions on how to register, navigate, and complete the course
  • Technical support available during business hours
  • A process to verify participant's ID
  • A method of preventing access to the examination until the course has been completed
Reciprocal Course Application

The following documentation is required for reciprocal approval from home states signed on to the 2019 CER agreement:

  • NAIC Uniform CER Filing Form
  • Home State Approval
  • Course content outline with estimates of the time to be spent on each topic covered that meets Alaska regulation 3 AAC 23.105
Course Renewal

CE courses may be renewed 60 days prior to and up to their expiration date by paying a $50 renewal fee and completing a CE course renewal application available through SBS.

The provider may no longer advertise, sponsor or offer the course in Alaska if you fail to renew before the course expiration date. There will be a 60 day window after the expiration date in which the provider may pay an additional $50 late CE course renewal fee, on top of the regular $50 CE course renewal fee, and reapply for course approval through SBS.

Course Requirements

Course Rosters

SBS will charge $1 per credit per licensee for course rosters filed through SBS after a licensee has successfully completed the course.

Course rosters must be file through SBS within 10 days after the completion of the course. The provider will be assessed a $250 fee if they fail to submit a course roster in time.

Rosters must include:

  • Names of the licensees that completed the course
  • Licensees’ NPNs
  • CE provider’s AK ID number
  • Course number
  • Number of credits earned by each licensee

Contact course rosters must also include:

  • Date the course was completed
  • Location of the course
  • Name of the instructor(s)
Certificates of Completion

Providers are required to issue a Certificate of Completion to all licensees that successfully complete a course within 30 days of the course completion date.

The provider will be assessed a $20 fee for each late Certificate of Completion.

The certificate must include:

  • Licensees’ name
  • Licensees’ NPN
  • CE provider’s name
  • CE provider’s AK ID number
  • Course number
  • Completion date for the course
  • Number of credit hours earned
  • Date and signature of the authorized designee of the provider
Advertising Courses

You are required to include the following information when advertising courses:

  • Continuing education provider’s name as approved
  • Course title as approved
  • Brief description of the course content
  • Approved number of credit hours

Contact courses must also include:

  • Time, date, and location the course will be offered 

CE courses may not be advertised before they have been approved by the division.

Instructor Qualifications

A qualified instructor must be trustworthy and meet one of the following qualifications:

  • Taught or presented a related subject matter a minimum of 3 of the last 5 years prior to the course
  • Currently licensed for subject being taught and in good standing for at least 3 of the last 5 years
  • Possesses a recognized professional designation in the subject being taught
  • Possesses an AA equivalent or greater degree in the subject matter taught or presented

An instructor who has had their insurance license suspended or revoked may still instruct a class if the provider has documented the reasons for the suspension or revocation and includes proof that the individual is now considered in good standing in the licensing state.

Making Changes to a Course

Any substantial change to an approved course requires the provider to file and receive approval for a new course.
