IMPORTANT NOTICE:

During the 33rd legislature SB 91, TELEHEALTH: MULTIDISCIPLINARY CARE TEAM legislation passed and has been signed into law with an effective date of 10/17/2024. This legislation adds a biennial renewal to the Telemedicine Business Registration, which means that a $100.00 renewal fee every 2 years will be implemented. Telemedicine Business Registrations will no longer be perpetual and will need to be renewed to continue offering telemedicine services to Alaskans.

In addition, effective September 17th, 2024, Telemedicine Business Registrations will no longer be available through MyAlaska. All telemedicine registrations will move to www.BusinessLicense.Alaska.Gov. Please see the information below for details.

1. Who is required to apply for a Telemedicine Business Registration?

Any business providing telemedicine services as defined in AS 44.33.381: "Telemedicine services" means the delivery of health care services using the transfer of medical data through audio, visual, or data communications that are performed over two or more locations by a provider who is physically separated from the recipient of the health care services.

A Telemedicine Business Registration is required for each business name (DBA) that the business provides telemedicine services under. Each doing business as name (DBA) requires a separate business license.

2. How do I apply for a Telemedicine Business Registration?

A Telemedicine Business Registration (TBR) is attached to an Alaska Business License issued through www.BusinessLicense.Alaska.Gov. A Telemedicine Business Registration is required for each business name (DBA) that the business provides telemedicine services under. Each doing business as name (DBA) requires a separate business license.

If you do not have an Alaska Business License yet:
  • Apply for a NEW Alaska Business License ONLINE at www.BusinessLicense.Alaska.Gov. This is immediate processing and posting.
  • During the application process, you may add the Telemedicine Business Registration to your new license.
If you already have an existing (active) Alaska Business License:
  • If your license is available for renewal (Oct. 1st of the expiration year), then, during the renewal process, simply add the Telemedicine Business Registration to your license. This is immediate processing and posting.
  • If your license is NOT available for renewal (before Oct. 1st of the expiration year), then, in between business license renewals, you may file a hard copy TBR application to add telemedicine services to your business license. File the Telemedicine Business Registration (Form #08-4694) to add this to your license via U.S. mail (do not e-mail). This form is not available to file online.
3. What are the fees for Telemedicine Business Registrations? Is there a renewal?

Telemedicine Business Registrations postmarked on or before 10/17/2024 will pay a fee of $50.00.

Effective 10/17/2024, a new or renewing Telemedicine Business Registration is $100.00, per AS 44.33.381. The expiration of a Telemedicine Business Registration will expire at the same time as the Alaska Business License and will be in 2-year increments.

4. Where can I view Telemedicine Business Registrations?

A Telemedicine Business Registration (TBR) is attached to an Alaska Business Licenses issued through www.BusinessLicense.Alaska.Gov. You can search Alaska Business Licenses that have a TBR at www.BusinessLicense.Alaska.Gov:

  • Click on SEARCH BUSINESS LICENSES. Any license with telemedicine will show in the “License Details” and will have its own certificate in the “Print Business License” file.
  • For a comprehensive spreadsheet of all TBRs, click on “License Search” (on the right-hand side), then click “Business License Download.” You may filter the spreadsheet to all businesses with a Telemedicine Business Registration.

5. Are licensed professionals required to apply for a Telemedicine Business Registration?

If you are an individual employed by a business, you do not need to apply for a Telemedicine Business Registration. The registration is for businesses and covers all employees.

An individual practitioner with their own business will need to register, whether that business is a sole proprietor, partnership, or an entity.

If you plan to or are already engaged in the practice of telemedicine/telehealth services, you must also adhere to all statutes and regulations specific to the board or program under which you hold a professional license. Please visit www.ProfessionalLicense.Alaska.Gov and contact your specific licensing board or program for questions related to your scope of practice.

6. Are out-of-state businesses required to register?

Yes, an out-of-state business that provides or plans to provide telemedicine/telehealth services for Alaska-based clients are required to register.

7. Are there any exemptions for Telemedicine Business Registrations?

No, there are no exemptions for businesses providing telemedicine/telehealth services to Alaska-based clients. Business corporations, cooperative corporations, non-profit agencies, religious organizations, and veteran clinics must obtain a valid Alaska Business License if telemedicine services are being provided. Boards or programs, however, may have exemptions for professional licenses. For professional licenses, go to www.ProfessionalLicense.Alaska.Gov and contact your specific licensing board or program if you have questions about exemptions.
