Newtok Planning Group

Mertarvik Relocation Project Steering Committee

In June 2016, the Newtok Village Council (NVC) received funding from the Denali Commission to hire a firm to provide professional project management services in support of the village relocation project. The NVC hired DOWL HKM as the project manager. In this capacity, DOWL HKM works for and reports directly to the NVC.

Shortly thereafter, a steering committee was formed, consisting of representatives from the Newtok Village Council, the Newtok Native Corporation (NNC), the State of Alaska, the Denali Commission, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The purpose of the steering committee is to advise the project manager, the NVC, NVC's local relocation coordinator and the NNC on the relocation and associated issues, and when necessary, assist in mediating issues/concerns raised by the project manager, the NVC, NVC's local coordinator and/or the NNC. The steering committee meets approximately each month. Steering committee meeting materials and updates are disseminated to the Newtok Planning Group at-large shortly after steering committee meetings take place.
