Business Licensing How to Change a Business License 1. I made a mistake on my NEW Alaska Business License. What am I allowed to correct? There are a few “non-substantive” changes or errors that can be corrected in your business license within 30 days. Per AS 43.70.030(e)-(f) and 12 AAC 12.050: ALLOWABLE (NON-SUBSTANTIVE) CHANGES OR CORRECTIONS WITHIN 30 DAYS: Correction to an address. Information erroneously placed in the wrong part of a license application. For example, the owner’s first and last name were reversed. Misspellings and minor typographical errors, such as: “Alaksa” to “Alaska”; “Manger” to “Manager”; or “Juno” to “Juneau.” Line of Business/NAICS codes provided for a trade, service, profession, or business activity. For any of the above changes, you may submit this form within 30 days: Business License: 30-Day Allowable Change (PDF) PROHIBITED (SUBSTANTIVE) CHANGES OR CORRECTIONS: A change to the business name (DBA). This includes a change, removal, or addition of one or more words in the business name, such as: “Shop” to “Boutique”; “Alaska” to “Juneau”; or “ABC Enterprises” to “XYZ Management.” This will require a NEW Alaska Business License. A change to the owners. This includes a change, removal, or addition of one or more owners of the business license. For example, “John Smith” to “ABC Enterprises LLC”; “Katie Smith” to “John Smith”; or adding or removing any other owner. This will require a NEW Alaska Business License. CHANGES OVER 30 DAYS: For a change of address, change to NAICS code, or change to an existing owner’s legal name, go to Business License Forms & Fees to complete the appropriate form. For a change to the business name, you must apply for a NEW Alaska Business License. For a change to the owners, you must apply for a NEW Alaska Business License. Submit a Business License: Address Change (PDF) to this office if you are in-between renewals. If your business license is available for renewal or will be available for renewal soon, update your addresses when you renew at RENEW Alaska Business License. NOTE: This will only update a business license issued through www.BusinessLicense.Alaska.Gov. How do I change the NAICS code(s) on my business license? Submit a Business License: NAICS Code(s) Change (PDF) to this office if you are in-between renewals. If your business license is available for renewal or will be available for renewal soon, update your NAICS code(s) when you renew at RENEW Alaska Business License. A change in the business name (DBA) requires a NEW Alaska Business License, unless: The change is limited to the addition or removal of a professional title of the business owner used in the name of the business. For example: “John Smith” to “John Smith, M.D.” If the current license owner is an entity and the ownership has not changed (including no change in AK Entity Number), a change to the DBA is limited to the addition or removal of a word describing the legal form of the organization of the business. For example, adding or removing “INC” or “LLC” or another entity indicator in the DBA name. All other changes to the DBA name require a new business license. If you no longer need your existing business license, you may submit Business License: Request to Cancel or Inactivate via U.S. mail (do not e-mail). Online filing is not available for this form. 5. How do I ADD a “Business Name” (DBA)? You will need to file for a NEW Alaska Business License. A new/separate business license is required for each name your business will be operating and advertising under; meaning, if you operate under more than one business name, then you may need to hold multiple business licenses. (1 Business License = 1 DBA name) The business must operate and advertise under the exact business name selected in the business license. You will need a NEW Alaska Business License. Business licenses are not transferable or assignable to a different owner, per 12 AAC 12.050(a)(2). Any change in ownership of a business license from one owner to another requires a new license. A “change of ownership” is considered: A person to another person. A person to an entity. An entity to a different entity. Adding or removing individuals or entities. Any other combination where one or more license owners are changing. What if the current Owner is the same, but the Owner’s legal name has changed? A legal name change means that there has been a LEGAL change in the name of the business owner due to a LEGAL event, but the ownership itself has not changed. For example: Marriage; Divorce; Court approved legal name change; or, The current owner is an entity and the entity has legally amended (changed) its name on record with the Corporations Section. If this applies to you, submit a Business License: Owner’s LEGAL Name Change (Form 08-4104) via U.S. mail (do not e-mail). Online filing is not available for this form. NOTE: This will only update a business license issued through www.BusinessLicense.Alaska.Gov. How do I add or change a Tobacco Endorsement in my business license? You cannot change an existing Endorsement (i.e. change of address/location). You will need to add a new Endorsement. To add a new Endorsement to an existing business license: If your license is available for renewal (Oct. 1st of the expiration year), then add a new Endorsement during the renewal process. If your license is NOT available for renewal (before Oct. 1st of the expiration year), submit Business License: NEW Endorsement(s) (Form #08-4730). For more information, go to: Endorsement FAQs 9. How do I add a Telemedicine Business Registration (TBR)? If you already have an existing (active) Alaska Business License and you need to add a Telemedicine Business Registration (TBR): If your license is available for renewal (Oct. 1st of the expiration year), then, during the renewal process, simply add the Telemedicine Business Registration to your license. This is immediate processing and posting. If your license is NOT available for renewal (before Oct. 1st of the expiration year), then, in between business license renewals, file a hard copy Telemedicine Business Registration (Form #08-4694) to add it to your license.
