Anthem Security Breach Update

February 12, 2015

The Division of Insurance (DOI) is meeting regularly with Anthem Premera and fellow regulators through the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in order to determine how many Alaskans were impacted by the breach. The DOI will continue to monitor the situation to ensure affected consumers receive resources they need to avoid financial distress as a result of the breach.

The DOI works collaboratively with other state insurance regulators throughout the country through the NAIC. Given the potential scope of the breach and the number of consumers affected, the NAIC is taking the unprecedented action of launching a multi-state examination of the Anthem companies. The NAIC indicates that it anticipates all 56 states and territories will sign on to the examinations, which will be inclusive of all subsidiaries and affiliates of Anthem affected by the breach. States with significant Anthem business will take the lead. Those states include Missouri, Indiana, California, Maine, and New Hampshire.

Currently, the DOI holds a seat on the NAIC Cybersecurity Task Force and is represented by Deputy Director Marty Hester. This Task Force has been charged with monitoring developments in the cybersecurity field and advising and making recommendations to the NAIC’s Executive Committee on Cybersecurity Issues.
