2006 Ketchikan Gateway Borough Annexation

Outcome:

The annexation of 4,701 square miles was approved after an amendment by the LBC, which excluded approximately 191 square miles around Meyers Chuck and Union Bay. The annexation received tacit approval of the legislature. The excluded area was included in the incorporation of the City and Borough of Wrangell in 2008. Because this annexation created an enclave out of the community of Hyder, the LBC's decision instructed the Ketchikan Gateway Borough to petition for an annexation of Hyder within five years, which it felt was ample time to prepare for service provision to Hyder. No petition was forthcoming, and a five-year follow-up report by LBC staff recommended no further action.
