Notice of Adopted Changes to the Regulations of the State Physical Therapy & Occupational Therapy Board

On April 28, 2021, the State Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Board adopted regulation changes in Title 12, Chapter 54 of the Alaska Administrative Code. The regulations update provisions for examinations, reexaminations, and scores for foreign applicants on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test (TOEFL-iBT), provide for supervision of a physical or occupational therapy assistant by video or teleconference if in-person supervision is not reasonable or practicable, and allow for telerehabilitation if a patient lacks in-person access to a therapist not only because of geographical constraints, but also because of health and safety constraints. The regulation changes were reviewed and approved by the Department of Law, signed and filed by the Lieutenant Governor (or designee) on July 8, 2021, and will go into effect on August 7, 2021. Please click HERE to see the filed version of the regulations. The new regulation changes will be printed in Register 239, October 2021 of the Alaska Administrative Code.

The State Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Board is staffed by the Division of Corporation and Professional Licensing. The Board consists of one physician, three physical therapists or physical therapy assistants, two occupational therapists or occupational therapy assistants, and one public member. Board members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.

The Board adopts regulations to carry out laws governing the practice of physical therapy and occupational therapy in Alaska. It makes final licensing decisions and takes disciplinary actions against people who violate licensing laws. The Board meets two times a year and offers a public comment period at each meeting. Meeting agendas and minutes are available from the licensing examiner and will be posted to this website once prepared.
