Important Notice Regarding Telemedicine: Following SB74, businesses engaged in the practice of telemedicine are required to register for placement on the Telemedicine Business Registry (TBR) through the Professional Licensing Section. Please click HERE to access the application and additional information regarding the registry. Please note that the application is for businesses rather than individual licensees to register; if you have any questions regarding scope of practice requirements or limitations regarding telemedicine, please contact the Board or program’s Occupational Licensing Examiner.

Continuing Education Requirements for Renewal

Effective April 24th, 2016, per 12 AAC 19.310, an applicant for renewal must complete the following continuing education activity:

  • Two (2) hours in professional ethics
  • Two (2) hours in addictions
  • Two (2) hours in cross cultural education
  • Two (2) hours related to domestic violence issues

The AMFTRB recently passed a motion to develop a process for English Language Learner (ELL) candidates. AMFTRB exam candidates whose primary language is not English will now be able to request tothe Alaska Board of Marital and Family Therapy two (2) additional hours to take the exam. Please note that if approved, you must file with the Professional Testing Corporation (PTC) at least eight (8) weeks prior to your scheduled exam. To fill out the form, please click here.

The Board of Marital and Family Therapy is staffed by the Division of Corporation and Professional Licensing. The board consists of three marital and family therapists and two public members. Board members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Legislature.

The board adopts regulations to carry out laws governing the practice of marital and family therapy in Alaska. It makes final licensing decisions and takes disciplinary actions against people who violate licensing laws. The board meets at least once a year and offers a public comment period at each meeting. Meeting agendas are available from the licensing examiner.

Notice Regarding e-Therapy
Anyone considering utilizing e-therapy, or online therapy needs to know that if you are living in Alaska and receiving e-therapy, or online therapy, from a therapist outside of Alaska, there is no process available for the regulation of that therapist. Please inquire with the therapist as to their credentials and license.
