Telemedicine Business Registry Frequently Asked Questions 1. Where exactly is the Alaska telemedicine business registry located? The registry can be accessed using the Professional License Search tool located here. You must select "Telemedicine Business Registry" under the Program drop-down menu and enter the DBA name for the business you are searching for. 2. Who is required to apply for placement on the telemedicine business registry? Any business providing telemedicine services, defined in AS 44.33.381 as: "the delivery of health care services using the transfer of medical data through audio, visual, or data communications that are performed over two or more locations by a provider who is physically separated from the recipient of the health care services" is required to fill out form #08-4694 provided by the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development. 3. What must I provide along with my telemedicine business registry application? You must make sure that your business name is indicated on the application and is written exactly as how it appears on your business license issued by the Alaska Business Licensing Section. You must provide the three-digit program code for the primary health care service your business will be providing. You must provide your Alaska business license number (not an entity number). When applying for an Alaska business license, you will be required to provide at least one professional license that best aligns with the profession under which the telemedicine services will be provided and should be based on the most appropriate NAICS code. For example, if the business will be providing counseling services, an Alaska professional license to practice marital and family therapy (LMFT), professional counseling (LPC), or clinical social work (LCSW) should be provided. 4. We engage in telemedicine/telehealth services for more than one health care profession... My business engages in telemedicine/telehealth services for more than one health care profession, but the telemedicine business registry application states to only indicate the three-digit code for the primary profession. Do I need to fill out separate applications for each health care service we provide through distance services? No, one registration is sufficient to cover all health care services your business provides, however, only the board or program for the health care profession you indicate on the application will receive the revenue from the $50.00 application fee. 5. Does my business qualify for placement on the registry? I own an Alaska business license and I and/or my employees engage or plan to engage in telemedicine/telehealth services. Does my business qualify for placement on the registry? Yes, as long as you hold a current Alaska business license, you qualify for placement on the telemedicine business registry. 6. Does a corporation need a business license for placement on the telemedicine business registry? I am a corporation and am already registered with Alaska DCCED’s Corporations Section. Do I still need a business license to apply for placement on the telemedicine business registry? Yes, corporations that employ licensed professionals who engage in or plan to engage in telemedicine/telehealth services must obtain a valid Alaska business license through the Business Licensing Section. 7. Are licensed professionals required to apply for the telemedicine business registry? I am a licensed professional in Alaska and I engage or plan to engage in telemedicine/telehealth services. Am I required to submit an application for placement on the Telemedicine Business Registry? Individuals (licensees) do not apply for placement on the telemedicine registry as the registry is for businesses, not licensees. Licensed individuals who have a sole proprietorship business license, however, must register. Out-of-state licensees who do not have an Alaska sole proprietor business license must obtain one before providing telemedicine services in this state. If you plan to or are already engaged in the practice of telemedicine/telehealth services, you must adhere to all statutes and regulations specific to the board or program under which you hold a professional license. How do I obtain an Alaska business license? Visit the Business Licensing Section at: BusinessLicense.Alaska.Gov 9. Are out-of-state businesses required to register? I am an out-of-state business that holds a contract with an Alaska-licensed business and our employees provide or plan to provide telemedicine/telehealth services for Alaska-based clients. Am I required to register? Yes. Your business must obtain an Alaska business license if you provide telemedicine services to Alaska-based clients. 10. How long will it take for my telemedicine business registry application to process? Generally, applications may take 1-4 weeks to process. You will receive a letter in the mail as well as a courtesy email status update (if an email address is provided) as soon as your application has been reviewed and/or your registration has been issued. 11. Are there any exemptions for the telemedicine business registry? No, there are no exemptions for business that will be or are providing telemedicine/telehealth services to Alaska-based clients. Business corporations, cooperative corporations, non-profit agencies, religious organizations, and veteran clinics must obtain a valid Alaska business license if telemedicine services will be or are being provided. Boards or programs, however, may have exemptions for professional licenses. Are there renewal requirements for the telemedicine business registry? No, there are no requirements for renewal. Once a business has been placed on the registry, the effective date is issued as "perpetual" and the business remains on the registry indefinitely or until a representative of the business submits a registry removal form #08-4727. 13. I would like to change my address or contact information. What do I do? Submit Change form #08-4722 to the Professional Licensing Section along with a $50.00 payment. 14. How can I conduct a search of professional licensees who are engaged in telemedicine? There is currently not a way to search for a comprehensive list of individuals who are presently engaged in telemedicine services using the Professional License Search tool, however, if you are the representative who has submitted an application on behalf of the business and also hold a professional license, the Records & Licensing Supervisor has automatically updated your license file to indicate “Telemedicine” as a specialty designation at the time of initial application processing. This specialty designation will appear if using the professional license search, but you must request a duplicate license to receive a hardcopy document reflecting your telemedicine specialty.
