Alaska Board of Nursing

The mission of the Alaska Board of Nursing is to actively promote and protect the health of the citizens of Alaska through governance of the practice of nursing.

The Board adopts regulations to carry out the laws governing the practice of Nursing and the work of Nurse Aides in Alaska. It makes final licensing decisions and takes disciplinary action against people who violate the licensing laws.

The Board meets four times a year and offers a public comment period at each meeting.

We encourage you to review and use the various options presented on this website.

IMPORTANT: Alaska Nurse Licensure Compact Survey

The Alaska State Board of Nursing (AKBON) is working with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) to conduct an updated Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) Survey. This survey is being sent to all RNs and LPNs that are actively licensed in Alaska as of mid-October 2023. Your responses will assist the AKBON in ensuring that the NLC is still desired by Alaska’s nurses, as the 2019 survey indicated.

Participation in this survey is voluntary, but highly recommended and requested. Your responses will be completely confidential and only aggregated data will be reported. The survey should take you less than 5 minutes to complete. The survey will close on Monday, November 27th.

The NLC allows RNs and LPNs to hold one multistate license with the privilege to practice in all 41 participating NLC jurisdictions, without obtaining additional licenses. If you’d like to learn more about the NLC before completing the survey, please visit and/or the AKBON’s NLC webpage available at

Take the NLC Survey

Due to multiple staff vacancies during a time of increased workload, we are currently unable to return calls and emails within our normal processing times. Our primary focus is on reviewing and issuing licenses.

If you have applied for licensure, please check the MY LICENSE online portal for real-time updates on the progress of your application. At current staffing levels, you can expect an update regarding the status of the initial application within 9-11 weeks. If you are then asked to provide additional documentation, it may take an additional 9-11 weeks to review.

For urgent situations that would result in a facility shutdown if licensing is delayed, employers can submit an Expedited Review Form (PDF). Employers should check with the applicants they intend to hire to ensure all required documentation has been submitted correctly and timely.

Answers to most other questions can be located using the links on the right-hand side of the page. Our goal is to respond to your inquiry within seven business days.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Hard Copy License Certificates Discontinued

The division has expanded our online services to allow licensees to download their own license certificates on demand. As a result, the division no longer mails hardcopy license certificates. The certificates will be located under the “initial application” and “renewal” events in the MY LICENSE account.

If you need guidance on how to set up or access your MY LICENSE account, you can access the MY LICENSE instructions here.
